Every designers main aim is to make sure his site is capable of holding its audience captive and ensuring they explore the site more. A great design theme and easy navigation are the basic requirements for such a site. However there are other pointers that must also be kept in mind by a designer before he begins to work on a project. This is to ensure that the website is a hit and not only basic in its popularity with the target audience.
The first pointer that a designer must keep in mind is to set a list of objective for designing the page. Theoretically, a webpage must load within a matter of two seconds to avoid losing out on audience. The designer therefore has to prioritize on the kinds of inclusions he would have on the web page. What kinds of tools he would include, because every inclusion only makes the web page heavier and it thus takes more time to load. Thus graphic files and other such types must be minimally used. The content and information which is mentioned in the site should be easily comprehensible. The language should be simple and must be of the standard of say, a fifth grader. This is because; websites cater to people from all over the world. English might not be the first language everywhere and therefore for the contents to be understood, the language must be simple and legible.
Another point that a designer must keep in mind, is that a user must be able find what he is looking for in three clicks or ideally even less. A very complicated navigation will lead to annoyance on the part of the user, and they might just drift to a simpler site.
User preferences, that is their likes and dislikes must also be kept in mind while designing a website. The designer must research with his clients to figure out what type of audience he will be catering to. If the kind of users using the site want a fun site and do not mind the downloading time required, heavy and bulky graphics and other fun stuff ca be included on the web page. On the other hand, if the users might tend to be impatient with the downloading time, heavy pages must then be avoid. Thus the human factor is very important for a designer to remember. The site should be deigned in such a way that visitors will want to use them and would prefer them over your competitors.
Thus a clear theme in mind, a use of the latest technology and keeping in mind the human factor is very important on the part of a good designer. He must be catering to a worldwide audience which will include a lot of different personality types and therefore he will have a lot of people to please. Therefore an in depth research is a good idea for any dedicated designer. This will also open up newer and better job opportunities for him.
